Hey hey... due to the recent demand for virtual machines, I thought I'd add a wiki page for the devs to check out. Actually, Roy thought of it first, but I'm claiming it.
So yes, we have an ESX box. We do have the ability to build new virtual machines, import machines (both physical and virtual) that you're working on, clone machines, and take live snapshots of them that we can restore after you're done breaking it. Here's a little bit of info:
ESX Server
- Dell PowerEdge 2900
- Dual quad-core Xeon 2.0 (16Ghz total)
- 8gb RAM
- 265GB built-in SCSI Storage
- 250GB external iSCSI LUN-mounted storage
VMWare ESX 3.5 / Virtual Infrastructure 2.0
- Splits RAM, CPU, and hard disk into commodities
- Releases resources back to the host when they're not being used
- Allows for over-allocation, enabling more virtual resources to be assigned to VM's than actually belong to the machine in total
- Also allows for per-vm over-allocation, which allows virtual machines to be assigned and to utilize resources above and beyond their initial default configuration
Considerations / Requesting Virtual Machines or Snapshots
- You can request virtual machines to be built, or if you have a virtual machine already built that you'd like imported, that can be arranged within reason (mostly space considerations at this point). Linux-based virtual machines will be built with the following specifications unless otherwise specified (if you need something special like more HD space, RAM or a static IP, please let us know.):
- Debian OS
- 256 meg RAM
- Single processor
- 5GB hard drive space
- 1 NIC
- No CD-ROM drive
- No Floppy Drive
- DHCP IP
- Note that the Deki Virtual Appliance, as it comes in pre-allocated at the max of 30 gig, is a space hog on our solo machine. Unless you absolutely need our VM, we're begging you to just go with a package install on a Debian base and SVN (we'll build it for you).
- If your VM is a single-use box or will be used only occasionally, let us know so that we can either delete it when you're done or shut it off while it's not in use.
- Snapshots are a great way to go back to points in time; if you want a snapshot before you do something to a virtual machine (when it's first built, before you delete something or change something drastic) we can take a snap for you in case you hose it. We can also go back over top of child snapshots to parent snaps without deleting the child too, in case you want to branch off from a point but still want to keep your current state available for later.
