Installing VMware image on VirtualBox

    Overview

    This walk-through, geared for beginners, will guide you through the steps to install MindTouch using our VMware image installation option using VirtualBox. VirtualBox is an open source alternative to VMware that is slightly easier to install.

    Goal

    After completing this tutorial you will have thr MindTouch VM up and running inside VirtualBox. This will allow you to run MindTouch in an isolated environment on your machine.

     

    Download the VMware image

    - Go to http://www.mindtouch.com/downloads and download the VMware image.

    Extract the MindTouch VM image

    - Go to the folder where your browser downloaded the VMware image.
    - Right click on the zip files and click Extract All.

    Import MindTouch into VirtualBox

    - Start VirtualBox.
    - Click "New".

    You will see a welcome screen.
    - Click Next.

    - Enter a name for the Virtual Machine. (ex: MindTouch_2010_VM)
    - Select Linux as the operating system and Debian as the Version.
    - Click Next.

    - Change the default memory settings if you wish, if you are unsure leave it unchanged.
    - Click Next.

    - Select "Use existing hard disk"
    - Click on the browser icon next to the drop down menu

    - Navigate to the extracted MindTouch folder.
    - Inside look for a file with the extension VMDK. (ex: MindTouch_2010_VM.vmdk )
    - Select it and click Open.

    - You will be shown a Summary screen.
    - Click Finish.

    Network Settings

    - Select the MindTouch virtual machine and click "Settings".

    - Navigate to the Network tab.

    - Next to "Attached to" select "Host-only Adapter".

    - Next to "Name" "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter" will appear automatically.

    - NOTE: If you wish to run updates on your MindTouch VM it is important to enable a secondary network interface:

    - In the above window click on the "Adapter 2". Enable the second Interface and Attach it to "NAT"

    Launch MindTouch

    -Select the MindTouch virtual machine.
    - Click Start.

    - A window will open and MindTouch will load.
    - Once it has finished loading you will see the screen above. Enter the ip address into your web browser to start using MindTouch. (ex: http://192.168.56.101)

    What's Next

    Now you can proceed with using MindTouch in an isolated environment on your computer. 

    Note that you cannot run update scripts from within the VM in "Host Only Adapter" networking mode. The VM cannot access the internet in this mode. If you wish to run update scripts then go to the networking settings of the MindTouch VM and switch the networking mode under "Attached to" to "Bridged Adapter". Under "Name" select the name of the network adapter that you are using to connect to the internet.
