How to translate to a new language

    Using our translator tool

We've developed a tool which will make it easy to create translations straight from the web. A developer account is required (sign-up at http://developer.mindtouch.com/) in order to use this tool. It is available at:

    http://translate.developer.mindtouch.com/

    Importing translations into MindTouch

If you have made modifications or want to apply a translation to MindTouch from translate.developer.mindtouch.com or from your own manipulation, do the following:

    1. Save the language as the appropriate region which is resources.{language code}.txt  You can see a list of codes below.  For this example I'm going to upload a dutch translating which has the language code of nl-nl, this means that the resource file is: resources.nl-nl.txt
    2. Once you have the resources file renamed, login to your MindTouch install via SFTP, SCP, or another form of file transfer and upload the file into the following directory according to operating system:
      Linux: /var/www/dekiwiki/resources
      Windows: C:\Program Files\MindTouch\MindTouch\web\resources
    3. Once uploaded then clear the cache which is found in the Control Panel under Maintenance and History

The language changes will then be visible on the front end. (Note: if you don't see changes right away you may need to clear browser cache too)

    Manually translating from MindTouch source

For those who mock GUIs and want to do manual translations.

Multiple localizations can exist side-by-side.  The active language is selected through Site Settings in the Control Panel.  To add another localized resources.txt file:

    • Create a new text document with a name of the form resources.xxxx.txt, where xxxx is <languagecode2>-<country/regioncode2>.  For example, use resources.en-us.txt to contain the resources for English US, resources.en.txt to contain for all English localizations. See table below for language codes.
    • Alternatively, download and rename the English translation to use as a starting point for translation: download English resources.txt
    • Use resources.custom.txt as a custom resources file.
    • Resources are determined by first checking in custom resources, then in region specific resources (e.g. resources.en-us.txt), then in language specific resources (e.g. resources.en.txt), and finally the neutral resources file (i.e. resources.txt
    • Place one resource per line in the form name=value with no spaces before or after the equal sign (=).
IMPORTANT: make sure all values are terminated with a newline character, including the last line!
    • Use $1, $2, etc to specify string parameters.
    • Use ';' to include comments.
    • To test your translation, put the file in the /resources/ folder of your wiki and then select it from the Site Settings language menu.

How to share your translation with the community

We maintain an email distribution list for translators - please email royk@mindtouch.com to be added to this list. The distribution list will allow us to contact you when changes are made to the resource keys.

Now that you've completed your translation you probably want to share it with the MindTouch community. To do that you can:

    • Create a subpage here with the title of your language. (Examples: English, Chinese, Pig latin, etc) Then attach your newly translated file to that page and leave a message so we can give you credit.
    • Visit our forums and post a new topic letting us know you have translated a new language.  Attach the language file to the post and we will take care of the rest.
    • Thanks for your contribution!

I can't get my norwegian translation to work. The menu displays all scandinavian characters as a square.

Make sure to save your language file in UTF-8.
