    Install VMware Player

The MindTouch VMware virtual image is a complete packaging of everything necessary to run MindTouch on any machine. In order to execute this virtual image, you will need to install the completely free VMware player on your machine.

Begin by downloading VMware player (~100 MB) and installing it on your target machine. You can follow our step-by-step tutorial for installing VMware player.

Note: VMware Player can't run as a service on a computer; if you log off of your computer or shut down VMware Player, your MindTouch install will not be available. If you are looking for a VMware platform to host your MindTouch install, we recommend VMware Server or VMware ESX.   Also the default network setting for the MindTouch virtual machine is NAT.  If you are deploying MindTouch in a production environment you will need to change the Network setting to Bridged.

1 Download the MindTouch VMware virtual image from Sourceforge.

    2 Extract MindTouch VMware Appliance

Once you have downloaded the MindTouch VMware virtual image, extract it using an unzipping tool on your computer.  If you are running on Windows then you can right click on the file and select Extract All.

3 Launch virtual environment for MindTouch

Open the folder that was extracted and double-click on the MindTouch VMware virtual machine configuration file:

    media_1253224872776.png

4 This will then launch VMware Player and load MindTouch.

(You must have VMware player installed in order to run this file). Note that the first time you load VMware Player, it will ask you to accept their license terms.

5 When MindTouch is finished loading, you will receive a screen which will have an IP address on it.

    media_1253641356128.png

Enter the IP address into your browser; you will be taken to the configuration screens shown below.

NOTE: You will not be able to highlight the IP address. If you click on the VMware Player screen and your mouse disappears, push CTRL and ALT at the same time and your mouse will be released.

These steps have successfully set-up the whole environment for which MindTouch to be installed in. Let's move onto steps for installing a MindTouch instance just for you!

    Installing MindTouch

When you load the IP address for the MindTouch install it will present you with the following web installer where you can click INSTALL next to the MindTouch product you want to install. In this documentation we will be selecting the MindTouch 2010 installation.

    =media_1284491455897.png

    What's Next

Use the section below to describe additional considerations that were omitted for brevity and to guide the reader to further tutorials.

By default the MindTouch Virtual Machine Appliance ships in NAT mode. This restricts access to the virtual machine to only the computer that it is hosted on. If you need to open the virtual machine to be accessed by other computers on your network then you will need to change it to Bridge Mode. Follow our tutorial to change it to Bridge mode.
